We have assembled a large number of external links to quality websites and blog posts covering all aspects of web design, web development, SEO (search engine optimization, freelancing, content management systems, and so on.
There are two categories of web design and web development resources on our website: (1) those we describe onsite, and (2) lists of offsite resources, or external links. We identify all external links (that is, links that take you to other websites) with this image:
.
Onsite resources: As far as we -- as a group of web designers and web developers -- are concerned, some web design and web development subjects are more useful to have at our fingertips than other subjects. There are some resources we use so often that we have written about them and presented them as content for this website. These ONSITE resources can be found on our sitemap (or site index) page.
Offsite resources: The easiest way to present web design and web development resources of interest is to create web pages of links to relevant, resource-rich websites. We have many such links, and most of them are on this page. When we have a significant number of resources in a given category, we split them off onto their own resources page. These separate resource pages are linked from this page.
Why do we go to the trouble to list all these resources, when it is so much easier and faster to just Google them? It's simple. The web design and web development resources that we list on our website consist of:
- web design and web development resources that are of value to us,
- resources we may visit repeatedly,
- resources that contain information that is particularly useful to our clients in making decisions regarding features for their own websites or ongoing web projects, and finally,
- resources we have noted and intend to research at a later time.
We hope you find these links helpful in your quest to learn more about these subjects or determine the needs for your own website(s) and web development projects.

CSS Layout Generators: Free Web Design Resources
The web design and web development resource websites in this section will allow users who know a little bit about CSS layout to create and automatically generate CSS layouts.
- Grid System Generator
Excerpt: There are a lot of useful web code generators and graphics generators out there on the web, but did you know that there are also css layout generators too? Today we are focusing on CSS grid layout generators. These tools will help you create and visualize different web design layouts and draw grids in various ways to assist you in your design process... - CSSCreator.com: CSS Layout Generator The layout generated has changed significantly from previous versions. The main reason for change was to simplify the layout and in doing so make it easier to use. It no longer provides fixed width columns with fluid center or full length columns by default... This generator will create a fluid or fixed width floated column layout, with up to three (3) columns and with header and footer. Values can be specified in either pixels, ems or percentages... Links to articles in the "Layout Hints" box to the right and the CSS Forum will provide help where needed... The generator requires a DOM-capable browser with JavaScript enabled... To create your layout, select the structural elements your site requires (header, footer, columns). Then specify a size in the field provided and choose a background color from the color chooser below...
- Layout-O-Matic We've already been through the pain of making our layouts cross-browser compatible, so you don't have to! In the spirit of the wonderful, here's the first of InkNoise's toys for the Web designer crowd... Select a layout type, width, and other options to the left, and then click Download or View and pick up your multi-column CSS layout starter kit (turning it into something unique and beautiful not included). You're welcome to use the resulting generated layouts for any purpose, personal or commercial... The resulting layouts have been tested in as many browsers as, appear to work in all of them except the 4.x browsers...
- HTML PHP CSS Website Template Maker This PHP - HTML - CSS template generator creates a two column layout with both a header and a footer. This PHP / CSS Style Sheet template generator outputs full featured tableless code i.e. tables are NOT used for the template with the column layout... The resulting template is actually a combination of several files (i.e. this is a true PHP, html, css template that makes it easy to control multiply pages at a web site). This template maker generates the following files... Bottom Line: This is a learn as you go code generator (i.e. by changing input values and then viewing the source code, it's possible to learn a lot about PHP, HTML and CSS column layouts). Since the generated page is broken up into the various files and all pulled together by PHP includes, the resulting page(s) will all be uniform in appearance. Not to mention, much easier to manage because changing one file (such as menu.html) will automatically change the content on ALL pages. Of course, using the external style sheet will automatically change all the fonts, colors, etc on all pages at once...
- FIRDAMATIC: The Design Tool for the Uninspired Webloggers :: Firdamatic™ is an online tableless layout generator that allows you to create and customize layouts easily only by completing forms, making creating skins for your Firdamatic-based layout a breeze. This tool is available for free for personal/non-commercial use only, and comes with no technical support as my interest in web design has died down. Use it at your own risk...
- The Perfect Fluid Width Layout :: I’ve been thinking a lot about screen resolution lately and how the use of fluid width websites is the best way to accommodate all visitors screen resolutions. The alternative, static width websites, have to make a choice. You can optimize for 800px width, the lowest common denominator, and give up the use of several hundred pixels of width for users with larger screens. Or, you can optimize for 1024px and just make your 800px visitors horizontal scroll. Anything wider than 1024px is too much for static width sites, in my opinion... I think the best possible scenario is to make a fluid width site that accomodates everyone. Here is what I think would be the "Perfect" fluid width layout: Works in all major browsers, Shrinks to 780px (This accomodates users with 800×600 resolution, with no horizontal scroll), Grows to 1260px (This accomodates users with 1280×768 resolution and everything in between - This accommodates 90%+ of all internet users. You could easily make this layout grow larger, but be mindful of how line-length affects readability. Nobody wants to read a line of text 1980px long. Sidebars are of "equal height" to the main content, Page content is centered for users with even higher resolutions...

PHP for Web Development
- 10 Advanced PHP Tips Revisited
Excerpt: This article is a rebuttal to 10 Advanced PHP Tips To Improve Your Programming — henceforth referred to as the previous article — published last November here on Smashing Magazine. The introduction sounds intriguing: Listed below are 10 excellent techniques that PHP developers should learn and use every time they program... Unfortunately, the intrigue devolves into disappointment. We disagree with many of the tips, and even when we don’t, the accompanying explanation is weak or misleading. In this article, we go through each and every tip from the previous article and provide our own commentary and evidence, either to validate and clarify the tip, or to refute it... - Getting Started with PHP Regular Expressions
Excerpt: The main purpose of regular expressions, also called regex or regexp, is to efficiently search for patterns in a given text. These search patterns are written using a special format which a regular expression parser understands... Regular expressions are originating from Unix systems, where a program was designed, called grep, to help users work with strings and manipulate text. By following a few basic rules, one can create very complex search patterns...vAs an example, let’s say you’re given the task to check wether an e-mail or a telephone number has the correct form. Using a few simple commands these problems can easily be solved, thanks to regular expressions... - Discussing PHP Frameworks: What, When, Why and Which?
Excerpt: PHP is the world’s most popular scripting language for many different reasons – flexibility, ease-of-use, among others – but often times coding in PHP, or any language for that matter, can get rather monotonous and repetitive. That’s where a PHP framework can help... PHP frameworks streamline the the development of web applications written in PHP by providing a basic structure for which to build the web applications. In other words, PHP frameworks help to promote rapid application development (RAD), which saves you time, helps build more stable applications, and reduces the amount of repetitive coding for developers. Frameworks can also help beginners to build more stable apps by ensuring proper database interaction and coding on the presentation layer. This allows you to spend more time creating the actual web application, instead of spending time writing repetitive code...The general idea behind the workings of a PHP framework is referred to as Model View Controller (MVC), an architectural pattern in programming that isolates business logic from the UI, thus allowing one to be modified separately from the other (also known as separation of concerns). With MVC, Model refers to data, View refers to the presentation layer, and Controller to the application or business logic. Basically, MVC breaks up the development process of an application, so you can work on individual elements while others are unaffected. Essentially, this makes coding in PHP faster and less complicated... - PHP Security: Fortifying Your Website- Power Tips, Tools & How to’s
Excerpt: Though many programmers and developers may be implementing PHP in their websites, the issue of PHP security is often overlooked when building a site. Insecure coding is rather common in PHP due to the fact that it’s such a forgiving language that will often work even when there are a few loose ends in the coding. These loose ends are what hackers are looking for, and in PHP, they’re not that hard to find. The key is for you to find them first, and to leverage PHP’s unique features to minimize your security vulnerability... PHP Security involves minimizing programming errors as much as possible, and putting proper code in place to protect against possible vulnerabilities – Often times this means putting 2-3 layers of protection in place to guard sensitive data against hackers that could otherwise cause a catastrophic result if compromised. Developers call this principle of redundant safeguarding Defense in Depth, and this concept has been proven over the years to be an extremely effective defense against malicious attacks... - 20 Useful PHP + jQuery Components & Tutorials for Everyday Project

You can even convert five (5) files in a single session; the limits on free conversions are not very strict at all! It rocks. Dynamic text replacement methods or resorting to very long fontstacks have long been the standard for using anything other than websafe fonts... But the @font-face function changes all that... services are cropping up all over for providing the fonts you want to embed on your site without eating up your bandwidth and server space... One of the biggest hurdles... while many fonts (especially open source fonts) have licenses that allow for embedding, others strictly prohibit it. Webfont services work with the type foundries to provide fonts for embedding while also providing the security that foundries insist upon... Currently, there are four such services available, though two (Typekit and Fontdeck) are still invite-only. Read on for more information about each...

- Why webfont services are the future of fonts on the web :: The debate about webfonts just reached its peak at a panel discussion on this year’s TypeCon conference. (You can listen to the 2 hours audio at Typographica and read summaries at i love typography and NiceWebType.) The discussion left a lot of people puzzled about how the future of fonts on the web might look like. Here is my outlook... As a type and web designer, webfonts were always of great interest to me. As a type designer I was shocked, when Safari started to support linking TrueType and OpenType fonts (now usually called “raw fonts” in this context) with Safari 3.1 in march 2008. Web designers could now upload my commercial fonts to a public web server where everyone could easily download them. One year later almost all type foundries seem to remain in this shock....

- Guide to CSS Font Stacks: Techniques and Resources :: CSS Font stacks are one of those things that elude a lot of designers. Many stick to the basic stacks Dreamweaver auto-recommends or go even more basic by just specifying a single web-safe font... But doing either of those things means you’re missing out on some great typography options. Font stacks can make it possible to show at least some of your visitors your site’s typography exactly the way you intend without showing everyone else a default font. Read on for more information on using and creating effective font stacks with CSS...
- Better CSS Font Stacks :: One aspect of designing for the web that almost immediately offends designers is the lack of fonts that are considered safe to use. While it is true that there are only a handful of web safe fonts, the ones we do have at our disposal can be quite powerful and diversely useful. On top of that, CSS gives us a nice little thing called a font stack. Font stacks give you freedom... Font stacks are prioritized lists of fonts, defined in the CSS font-family attribute, that the browser will cycle through until it finds a font that is installed on the user’s system. This means that you can use Gill Sans, and if your users don’t have it, you can give them an adequate substitute that will not diminish their experience... there are quite an array of typefaces that may be sitting on your user’s machine ready to serve your design needs...

Excerpt: Color in design is very subjective. What evokes one reaction in one person may evoke a very different reaction in somone else. Sometimes this is due to personal preference, and other times due to cultural background. Color theory is a science in itself. Studying how colors affect different people, either individually or as a group, is something some people build their careers on. And there’s a lot to it. Something as simple as changing the exact hue or saturation of a color can evoke a completely different feeling. Cultural differences mean that something that’s happy and uplifting in one country can be depressing in another... This is the first in a three-part series on color theory. - Designing a WordPress Theme From Scratch
Excerpt: A lot of people are martyrs and want to get their hands in the dirt and design their own WordPress Theme from scratch. That’s okay. I did that, and then got smarter. Let’s start with the smarter choice... First, find a WordPress Theme architecture that you like, be it one or two sidebars, or no header, or whatever you want. Forget about the colors, graphics, and fonts. Just concentrate on the layout. If nothing pleases you, then I recommend you try the new Sandbox Theme, another great way to start your WordPress Theme from scratch. Secondly: Download a couple of Themes you like and put them through their paces on your test site. Excerpt: While some claim pretty URLs help in search engine rankings, the debate here is fierce, we can all agree that pretty URLs make things easier for our users and adds a level of professionalism and polish to any web application. There were two messages stuck in the outbox because the attachments were way too big (24MB each). I tried to delete them from the Outbox, but only one of them could be deleted. I tried and tried to delete the other stuck message but it would not delete; sometimes I got an error message to the effect of "Cannot delete because message is in the middle of being sent" (rough paraphrase). I found the solution: all I had to do was switch to offline mode, under the File menu item.
Excerpt: We've all done it once or twice -- we'll have a message stuck in the Outbox because it's too large for Outlook to send. Deleting it doesn't work - Outlook returns an error because the message is being processed by the MAPI spooler. In most cases you can delete the stuck message if you set Outlook offline using the File, Offline menu. Wait about a minute or so for the spooler to shut down or close Outlook and reopen. Go to the Outbox and delete the message then put Outlook back online using the File, Offline menu... If you are unable to delete the message while in offline mode or cannot go into offline mode, you'll need to change your default delivery location: 1. Add a new PST using the File, New, Outlook Data File menu; 2. Open the Email Accounts dialog on the Tools menu; 3. Select view or Change existing email accounts and click Next; 4. Select the new personal folders file from the Deliver new email to the following location list; 5. Click Finish and restart Outlook... Browse to the old message store, delete the message from the Outbox and repeat steps 2 - 5 to restore the original PST as the default delivery location and close the new PST... - Serial Shack :: I used this the other day because I could not find my old Fireworks serial number from which I was upgrading.
